Isn't plastic fantastic? Or do you, like me, agree that it is not?

Plastic is basically a mix of petrol and oil. We as humans, consume approximately a credit card of plastic per week. Plastic has a catastrophic effect on our planet. It increases carbon omissions, creates a toxic soup of our oceans, contributes to cancers (and many other diseases) and in case you forgot, also is a contributor to climate change.

So, set your intentions, and this July commit to make a plastic free pledge and try some of these simple ideas to change your behavior for Plastic Free July.

SUBSCRIBE TO WIN A FRANK GREEN WATER BOTTLE

To help launch Plastic Free July 2022 and the start up of Eco Surf Australia, we have a Frank Green giveaway.

These water bottles are selling faster than hot cakes and a great way to not only keep hydrated and on trend but also to reduce the consumption of single use plastics.

REUSEABLE SHOPPING BAGS.

Get organized when you head to the shop.

Grab yourself a range of reusable shopping bags to hold all your grocery needs whether this be in the form of string bags, hessian bags, cloth bags or discarded department store bags.

If you are like me and love everything matched as well as neat and tidy, companies such as Pelli Bags offer shopping bag kits which include vegetable drawstring bags, fruit string bags, cooler bags (for your frozen and cold items including meat and dairy), medium size shoppers and a jumbo sized bag for all to stack into. Added extras include an internal zipper for your keys and an external phone pouch or shopping list pocket.

BYO KEEP CUP

Do you know 23% of Australians drink coffee to go every day.

Sadly, this means Australians throw out 2.7 million single-use or disposable coffee cups every single day. This adds up to 1 billion coffee cups being thrown into landfill annually!

Legislation in some Australian states and territories are phasing out take away coffee cups lined with plastic. This must be good news I hear you say? However; it has led to an influx into the market of another problem of waste - the eco or bio cup!

A plant lined bio cup is designed for a one time use. Unfortunately the cup, in order to biodegrade has to go into a commercial composting facility. It is not better positioned than its old plastic lined friend in general waste, it cant be recycled and it wont decompose in your home composter.

So the best option is to BYO Keep Cup. There are so many options on the market including one of world's first barista standard reusable coffee cups from the Australian Founded company Keep Cup. My favorites to ensure the optimum taste of my coffee are those manufactured from glass such as Joco or ceramic such as Porter Green or Frank Green.

“Each one of us can make a difference. Together we can make change.”

GO STRAWLESS

Ditch the straw and go naked! Go on - you can do it!

However; if you feel your milkshake or cocktail isn't quite the same without your lips curled around a tubular pipe, grab yourself a reusable stainless steel version or swap plastic for the pretty paper type.

Your actions will be welcomed by the millions of seabirds and turtles who die each year from the ingestion of plastic straws #onestraw #plasticfreejuly #gostrawless #strawsnomore

BYO TAKEAWAY CONTAINERS

Yes I am a busy mum and often one weeknight dinner is a trip to the local Thai restaurant or one of the many providores selling pre-made meals. However; rather than accept the plastic takeaway containers, I have started to bring in my own vessels to take home my meals.

In speaking to my local butchers, take away food outlets and restaurants, most are very happy to serve their wares into your containers as it does two things:

  1. Saves them money and

  2. Helps the environment.

It also helps create a facade that I am a very capable chef. I have been known to claim the outsourced cooking as my own. I call that a cheeky win!
